Mining industry - now for students

On April 2, at the Bishkek Humanities University there was held a master class on mining industry in Kyrgyzstan. The mining industry has gained wide popularity among the media and among ordinary citizens. Considering relevance of problems in this area, a complete presentation with illustrative examples was presented to students.

As a speaker was the Head of the Secretariat Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) – Karybek Ibraev. In his speech, the lecturer spoke about what mineral resources are valued more than any other in the world, how demand and prices of selected minerals have changed for the last 10 years. He also told about what natural resources are found on the territory of our country and how things have changed in the mining industry over the past 15 years.

At the end of presentation, the students were able to ask the speaker questions, to share their own observations and find an expert opinion regarding certain issues. So, for example, the question of one of the students concerned the staffing situation in the mining industry.

"The number of qualified personnel for today remains very small. There are a lot of universities in our country, and although there are certified specialists, their knowledge in this area often inappropriate. Besides, now everybody studying to be geological engineers, while there is a lack in workers who could operate machines and equipment, "- the Head of EITI stated his opinion.
