Environmental Council Meeting Held in Bishkek: New Initiatives and a Focus on Cooperation

The Environmental Council, established in 2020 and updated in 2024, serves as a platform to coordinate efforts from different sectors to improve the environmental situation in Bishkek.

Deputy Mayor of Bishkek R.G. Aliev opened the meeting and outlined its main objectives. He emphasized:

"The Mayor has proposed holding such council meetings regularly. The next session will be organized soon, inviting even more experts and featuring the Mayor of Bishkek himself. We are ready for dialogue, open to listening, and even welcoming criticism," said the Deputy Mayor.

During the meeting, participants discussed measures to improve the city's environmental conditions and presented new initiatives. Special attention was given to nature-based solutions for urban development.

M. Sagynalieva, Chairwoman of the Board of the Green Alliance of Kyrgyzstan, delivered a report on the current ecological situation in Bishkek. D. Pereyaslavsky, an environmental expert from MoveGreen, presented an innovative vertical greening project as a method to combat air pollution.

One of the key topics was the discussion of the Environmental Council’s work plan for 2025, which includes public environmental education initiatives and measures to protect the environment.

Azat Muradyl, Head of the public organization MoveGreen, highlighted:

"The Environmental Council is an effective platform for discussing ecological issues. The Mayor’s Office and the Ministry of Natural Resources are doing important and significant work. At the same time, we should also recognize the role of civil society organizations and the expert community. Currently, we are implementing a joint green project with the Mayor’s Office — our first demonstration project."

The event was supported by the Institute for Public Policy Development and MoveGreen within the framework of the Partnership for Local Self-Government Development initiative.

The Environmental Council continues to play a crucial role in shaping the city's environmental policies and coordinating efforts to create a cleaner, healthier Bishkek.
